I had often wondered how quickly an
on board ni-cad lost its charge while not in use, so I decided to
experiment, which in my case gave the following results. (Carried out on
two batteries)
From full charge, my 4 cell Rx ni-cads lost at least 15% of their
capacity in 2 days. After this, the loss rate slowed, such that after a
further 5 days only 5% more was lost. Therefore after a week the
batteries still held 80% of their charged capacity.
However temperature plays an
important part in loss rates and low temperatures can mean higher
losses. Also the age or condition of the battery will have an effect. So
the message is:-
Always check before you fly! 'On board' battery checkers for only
a few pounds are good value for your money.
